The Amazon does not begin in Iquitos. It begins ninety kilometres upstream at Nauta, where the Marañón and the Ucayali give up their separate names. Every Iquitos Amazon River Cruise therefore departs from a city standing on the river's second chapter rather than its first.
Iquitos itself was founded in 1757 as a Jesuit mission among the Napeano and Iquito peoples, a clearing of a few hundred souls. No road has ever reached it. Half a million people now live there, and every one of them arrives by water or by air.
The rubber boom rewrote the place. Between roughly 1880 and 1912, latex tapped from Hevea brasiliensis made Loreto's capital improbably rich. Barons imported Portuguese azulejos by the shipload, and the tiled façades along the Malecón Tarapacá still carry them. The Casa de Fierro, a prefabricated iron house attributed to the workshop of Gustave Eiffel, arrived in numbered pieces and was bolted together on the Plaza de Armas in the 1890s. When Asian plantations broke the monopoly, the money drained away within a decade. The buildings stayed.
What draws vessels out of the city now is the water itself.
